Collection: Anton Piche

Anton Piche’s life has been one of artistic devotion, cultural exploration, and relentless reinvention. Born in French Algeria just before the country’s volatile independence, he and his family were displaced, leading to a transient childhood across mainland Europe. His formative years were spent absorbing diverse influences, culminating in his move to Paris in 1971 after a five-year stay in Venezuela.

In Paris, he immersed himself in the rigorous traditions of painting and sculpture, studying at the prestigious Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA). Under the guidance of master painters and sculptors, he developed a deep respect for classical techniques, grinding his own pigments and embracing the alchemy of color. His time at Château Noir—the site immortalized by Cézanne—further connected him to the spirit of artistic history.

In the years that followed, Piche’s artistic and personal journey took him across London, Italy, Spain, and Australia, shaping his ever-evolving approach to art. In the 1990s, he established himself in Spain, exhibiting throughout Andalusia before ultimately returning to Australia.

For over a decade, Piche withdrew from painting, spending years immersed in the raw beauty of the Australian outback. However, his return to the studio marked a resurgence, leading to major accolades such as the Queensland Figurative Art Prize (2014, 2018).

Today, his studio in Brisbane is a sanctuary of creativity, filled with books, textiles, and mementos of a lifelong artistic pilgrimage.

His work—rooted in both European tradition and contemporary expression—captures the essence of movement, memory, and emotion, making each painting a new beginning.
